Old furniture must not be left by household waste bins — it is bulky waste, and it has a separate procedure. In Riga there are three realistic options in practice, and the choice mostly depends on whether you have transport and whether you can get the item down from the flat yourself.
Why furniture can't go in the ordinary courtyard bin
A household waste bin is meant for everyday bags. Furniture is bulky waste: it doesn't fit, and even broken into pieces it usually isn't taken with the ordinary collection. The furniture stays in the courtyard, collection has to be arranged separately, and the cost often lands on the building's shared bill. 1. Waste sorting sites
Riga and the surrounding area have waste sorting sites where private individuals can hand in bulky items and furniture too. That is the most literal meaning of a "drop-off point" — you bring the item yourself and hand it over on site.
The sites are not all the same. They are run by different operators, and the waste types accepted, the volume limits, the opening hours and the charging conditions differ and change over time. That's why we deliberately don't publish addresses and opening hours for particular sites — wrong information would mean driving a full car to a place that won't take your furniture.
What to find out before you drive
Before you dismantle the wardrobe and load it into the car, contact the operator of the site in question and check:
Furniture, mattresses and appliances are different categories, and not all of them are accepted everywhere.
Several large items in one go may be capped or charged separately.
Weekend and public holiday hours often differ from weekday hours.
In some places free drop-off is tied to your declared address.
That determines how much of the work you have to do at home.
This option works if the furniture is already dismantled, is downstairs and you have a big enough vehicle. A sofa or a double mattress won't fit in a car.
2. Bulky waste collection arranged by the building manager
Managers of blocks of flats periodically arrange a bulky waste collection: a large open skip is placed in the courtyard for a few days, and residents may put furniture and other large items in it. It is announced on a notice in the stairwell or on the manager's website.
This is usually the cheapest option, because the cost is already in the management bill. But it has two drawbacks:
- You can't choose the time. The skip appears when it is delivered, not when you have a free Saturday or when your tenancy ends.
- You still have to get the furniture downstairs yourself. The skip stands in the courtyard, not in your flat.
What neither of these options solves
Both self-service options leave the same part to you: the furniture has to be dismantled and carried out of the flat. That is usually the hard part, and the part most often underestimated.
A wardrobe, a bed or a corner sofa usually won't go through the flat door in one piece — it will have to be taken apart, and on old furniture the screws tend to be rusted. A sofa can't be turned single-handedly at a stairwell turn: it has to be held at both ends at once. On the fifth floor with no lift, getting a bed frame down is serious physical work, and the stairwell has banisters and neighbours' doors that can be scratched.
That is precisely what a paid service is for: it solves not "where to take it" but "how to get it out of the flat and there".
3. A furniture removal service
We arrive at the agreed time, dismantle if needed, carry the furniture out of the flat, load it and haul it to the landfill. No transport to arrange, no skip to wait for, and nothing to carry down the stairs.

What we don't take
So you don't waste your time, here it is up front: we don't take construction waste (concrete, bricks, demolished walls, tiles), hazardous waste (paints, chemicals, oils, batteries) or tyres. Those categories have a separate disposal procedure, which you need to check with your waste management company. We also don't move furniture to a new address — we remove it and hand it over for disposal.
