Sofa Removal in Riga

The sofa is the piece of furniture that most often starts the trouble. It is rarely heavy — far more often it simply doesn't fit through the door or won't turn on the stairwell landing. With upholstered furniture the deciding factor is geometry, not weight.

Why the sofa won't go out through the same door it came in

In roughly half the jobs we go out to, the answer is the same: the sofa arrived in the room before the room took on its present shape. It was carried in before the renovation, when the door frame wasn't fitted yet. It was assembled in the room from separate parts. Or it went up in a lift that has since been replaced with a smaller one.

That's why we ask for a photo before we set off: from the shape of the sofa and the width of the door we can already tell whether we'll carry it out whole or whether you should expect dismantling.

Where a sofa usually gets stuck

• In the room door — the sofa was carried in before the renovation or assembled on the spot;
• On the stairwell landing between floors, where it has to be lifted vertically;
• In a lift that is too short for a long sofa — the cabin's diagonal is shorter than the sofa's frame;
• In a narrow hallway with nowhere to turn it, because a fitted kitchen or a wardrobe is right next to it;
• In a front door with a double frame, where the real opening is several centimetres narrower than it looks.

Why it takes two people to carry a sofa out

On a stairwell landing a sofa has to turn in two planes at once — one end lifted upwards and the whole piece rotated on its axis. One person can't do that, because the item has to be held at both ends at the same time and the two ends move in opposite directions. The second reason is control: with two people the sofa can be stopped halfway and repositioned instead of being let slide down the steps.

Corner sofa removal

Corner sofas almost always separate into sections at specific points. At the factory they are designed as two or three separate modules joined by metal hooks, screw-in clamps or plates with dowels — usually under the seat cushions, behind removable trim or at the back of the sofa. It is exactly at these joints that the modules come apart without damage.

That matters in practice: finding the joint means a three-metre corner sofa turns into two parts, each of which now goes through an ordinary room door. If the joint isn't found and a section is pulled apart by force, the frame breaks.

Sofa beds and pull-out sofas

Pull-out sofas and sofa beds have a folding metal mechanism with springs or gas struts inside. That practically doubles the weight compared with an ordinary sofa of the same size — from the outside it isn't visible, and that is exactly why it's worth stating it in your request: it determines how many people we send.

The other issue is safety. When the item is carried at an angle down the stairs, the mechanism can open on its own and snap shut just as quickly, trapping fingers. So before carrying it out we strap or wire the pull-out section shut. The same goes for sofa beds with a storage box — we secure the lid so it doesn't spring open on the way.

Old sofa removal and disposal

An old sofa has no buyer and no second owner. The upholstery wears out, and the only route left is sofa disposal — we take it to the landfill and hand it over for disposal.

Old sofas also need extra attention at the moment they are carried out. On a long-used frame the glued joints have worked loose, and if you lift such a sofa by an armrest or the backrest it can simply come apart in your hands. So we lift an old sofa by the underside of the frame, not by whatever looks like the most convenient grip.

Sofas that have stood in a basement or an unheated room have upholstery that has soaked up moisture. That makes the piece noticeably heavier, and the fabric tears under your fingers. We wrap sofas like that so no damp streaks are left in the stairwell.

When a sofa has to be cut up

There are flats where a sofa won't come out whole by any means — the sections don't separate and the door is narrower than the frame. Then we cut it on the spot: we strip the upholstery and saw through the wooden frame so the parts can be carried out separately.

You need to know this in advance, because the process creates dust and foam crumbs — we sweep the work area afterwards. Cutting is irreversible, so we only do it with the customer's approval and only when there is no other option.

Price

Sofa removal starts at €35, excluding VAT. If dismantling is needed, it is added from €15. The minimum order is €30.

The condition of the sofa does not affect the price and is never a reason for refusal. A broken frame, stains or a collapsed seat are the same job to us — we simply carry a damaged sofa out more carefully.
