How to prepare for furniture removal

Getting ready takes a couple of minutes. The main thing to know up front: you don't have to dismantle anything and you don't have to carry anything. Dismantling, carrying out and loading are our job.

We set the price from your photos, so what matters is what's in the frame, not the quality of the shot. Photograph each item whole and in full frame — not close up and not in parts. If a wardrobe stands against a wall, one photo from a distance showing its height and width is enough.

Take two more photos that in practice decide the whole job: the doorway of the flat and the narrowest point of the stairwell — usually the turn between two flights or the landing by the door. Those are exactly the points that determine whether an item goes out whole or has to be dismantled first, and therefore they affect the price too. Nothing needs measuring — we judge the size ourselves.

Empty the furniture

Drawers, wardrobes, shelves, the storage compartment under a sofa and the bedding box in a bed all need to be empty. There are two reasons. First, the contents spill out while the item is being carried — a drawer slides open by itself in the stairwell and the clothes or crockery end up on the steps. Second, a full item weighs considerably more: a wardrobe full of clothes or a bed with a full bedding box is heavy where an empty one would simply be awkward.

We don't sort the contents of furniture or remove them separately, so anything left inside goes with the furniture.

Before the crew arrives

• Take out personal belongings and documents. Check under the sofa cushions, behind the wardrobe and under the bed — things the owner had long written off regularly turn up there.
• If you can, clear a route to the door. If the room is full of boxes and there is nowhere to put them, just tell us in advance — it isn't compulsory.
• Disconnect appliances from the mains, and a washing machine or dishwasher from the water supply too, if you can do that safely. If you can't, leave it and say so in the form.
• Shut dogs and cats in another room. The flat door stands open while we work, and the stairwell is open too.

What to mention in the form's notes

Write in if the stairwell is narrow or has a sharp turn, if there is a barrier or an archway into the courtyard, if parking by the building is limited or in a paid zone, and above all — if the lift is out of order. A lift that exists but isn't working because of repairs changes the whole carrying-out job. Better to know that in advance than to find out on the day.
