A mattress is one of the most awkward things to get rid of. It isn't heavy, but it is large, unfoldable and unwieldy — carrying it down a stairwell on your own is very nearly impossible. You aren't allowed to leave it by the bins, and many sorting sites don't take mattresses at all.
We remove mattresses in Riga and the surrounding area. We arrive, carry it out of the flat, load it and take it to the landfill.
Why a mattress is so awkward to carry
The problem isn't the weight. An average double mattress is lighter than a wardrobe or a sofa, but it has no point you can properly grip — no legs, no frame, no handles. The only thing there is the edge binding, and that tears if you pull the whole weight by it.
The second problem is that a mattress doesn't hold its shape. Lifted upright it bends under its own weight and catches on banisters and door jambs. On a stairwell landing a mattress collapses in one person's arms — which is why two people carry it: one leads the end around the turn, the other keeps the mattress straight.
The third problem is width. A double mattress won't go through a standard flat door flat — it has to be tipped on its side and steered through diagonally, and that is the moment when the door frame most often gets scratched.
Which mattresses we remove
— the heaviest and the stiffest. They can't be rolled or folded: there is a metal spring unit or frame inside, so the mattress stays flat and rigid the whole way to the van;
— lighter, but bulky. The flexibility is the problem: while being carried they bend and block the view of whoever is walking in front;
— 160×200, 180×200 and larger. These won't go through a flat door or into a lift lying flat;
— 80×190, 90×200 and smaller;
— wooden slatted bases, metal frames and bed boxes;
— including ones with stains, tears or spring ends poking through.
The condition of the mattress makes no difference to us
A mattress somebody wants rid of is usually not in pretty condition — stained, split at a seam, long stored in a basement or a summer house and full of damp, or associated with bed bugs.
None of that affects whether we take the mattress or what it costs. The condition only changes how we prepare it for carrying: a damp or dirty mattress gets covered before we carry it out, so it doesn't leave marks in the stairwell and the lift.
The mattress doesn't have to be cleaned or prepared before we arrive. A photo in the form is enough for us to know the size and the type.
Why a mattress is hard to throw out yourself
A mattress is bulky waste, not household waste. It must not be left by the building's bins, and if it is, the property manager can charge extra — not to the individual flat, but to the whole building.
Taking it yourself means several problems in one: finding a big enough vehicle — a double mattress won't fit inside a car even tipped on its side — finding a second person to carry it, and working out which site will accept that particular mattress at all. Why the mattress stays on the balcony
The new mattress was usually bought long ago, while the old one stands on the balcony, in the basement or pushed against the wall in the spare room. It stays there for months not out of indifference, but because removing it takes a vehicle, a second person and a free afternoon — and those three things rarely line up on the same day.
That's why we offer mattress removal on its own, not only as part of clearing a whole flat. If there is just one mattress to go, that's enough to book.
Bed mattress disposal — the mattress together with the bed
The most common real case isn't a single mattress, but a mattress together with the bed. When the bed is being replaced, the old mattress usually doesn't suit the new one — the size or the height doesn't match — so both go at once.
We remove the whole set: the mattress, the bed base with its slats, the leg frame and the headboard. We dismantle the bed frame on site if needed, because an assembled double bed won't go through a flat door. If the bed has to be dismantled, say so in the form — dismantling is a separate item in the price list.

We collect from upper floors too
Here the floor matters more than it does for most furniture. A double mattress usually doesn't fit in a lift: in a standard cabin you can neither lay it flat nor stand it upright, because the cabin is both narrower and lower than the mattress. That means that even in a building with a lift, a double mattress travels by stairs.
A single or a child's mattress usually does fit in a lift stood on its side. So in the form we ask for the floor, whether there is a lift and the size of the mattress — those three things together are what make the price known in advance. There is no limit on the number of floors: in Riga city-centre buildings with narrow stairwells the mattress travels just the same, only more slowly.
What we don't do
We remove mattresses and hand them over for disposal. We don't move them to another address, sell them or pass them on. We also don't take construction waste, hazardous waste or tyres — if the mattress is in a pile of renovation debris, say so in your request.
