An old fridge is one of the heaviest objects in a household. It must not be left by the bins, and it won't fit in a car. So it often stays standing in the kitchen, on the balcony or in the basement long after it has been replaced. The same goes for an old washing machine — it takes up space in the bathroom or the hallway simply because there's nobody to carry it out.
What we remove

Why a fridge is hard to carry out yourself
A fridge isn't simply heavy — it's heavy in an awkward way. The weight is spread over a tall, narrow body, so tilting it even slightly pulls it sideways harder than you'd expect. And there's nothing to grip: smooth side edges, a thin sheet-metal back and a plastic handle that was never meant to hold the whole weight.
While it's being carried, the doors tend to swing open at exactly the wrong moment and hit the banisters or the wall. Tall two-door models won't turn on narrow stairwell landings — in old Riga buildings the half-landings are often so short that a fridge can't be turned all the way round. And a fridge mustn't be carried lying down in just any position for long — we try to keep it sensibly upright, which makes the work on stairs harder still.
That is exactly why two people do this job, with straps. Scratched walls and wrenched stairwell door hinges most often happen when somebody tries to carry it alone.
Washing machines — their own set of problems
A washing machine looks compact but is surprisingly heavy for its size: inside there is a concrete counterweight that holds the machine in place while it runs, and that accounts for a large part of the weight.
Before removal the machine has to be disconnected from the water and the electricity. Most importantly, there is almost always water left in the machine: in the tub, in the filter and in the hose. If it isn't drained, the water spills out exactly while the machine is being carried down the stairs. On older machines the transit bolts that hold the tub were removed and lost long ago, so the tub moves freely inside and the machine "lives a life of its own" while it's being carried. That's normal — we know about it and handle it accordingly.
How to prepare the appliance
- Empty itTake the food out of the fridge, and the laundry and detergents out of the washing machine.
- Defrost the fridgeUnplug the fridge or freezer the day before. If you don't, meltwater runs out of the bottom of the casing during the carry-out — onto the stairs, into the lift and across your hallway.
- Take out the shelves and drawersGlass shelves, boxes and door racks slide and knock about while it's being carried. Separately they travel safely; inside, they don't.
- Secure the doorsTape or string is enough to stop the doors opening on the way.
- Disconnect the washing machineClose the stopcock, disconnect the hoses and drain the remaining water from the filter at the bottom.
Not everyone has the strength, the tools or the time to do it. Note in your request that the fridge isn't defrosted or that the washing machine is still connected — knowing that in advance, we arrive prepared for it.
Freezers and built-in appliances
Chest freezers are low but wide. Their problem isn't the height but the width — they often won't go straight through a bathroom or balcony door and have to be turned on their side. Upright freezers behave just like fridges.
A built-in fridge is fixed inside a kitchen unit — with a front panel, mounting strips or screws into the adjoining cabinet. Before it can be carried out it has to be released from its housing. We do that; you don't have to dismantle the kitchen yourself. If we're removing the kitchen units as well, see bulky item removal.
Non-working and very old appliances
People often ask whether the fridge has to be working and whether we take it if it's cracked, rusted or missing its doors. We do. Technical condition and age make no difference to whether we remove an item — we take it away to be handed over for disposal, not for use.
Price, floor and lift
Fridge removal starts at €30, excluding VAT. The minimum order is €30, so if there's an old washing machine, a mattress or some chairs at home too, it's better value to take it all in one go rather than one item per trip.
Floor and lift matter more for appliances than for furniture. A piece of furniture is large but comparatively light — it can be dismantled and carried out in parts. A fridge and a washing machine are dense: all the weight is in one solid object. Five flights of stairs with a chair and five flights with a fridge are completely different jobs. So tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and whether the appliance fits in it — in some old lifts a tall fridge simply won't go in.
We also carry appliances down from upper floors when there is no lift. We don't apply a stairs surcharge as a separate figure — we set the price from the actual situation, based on the photos.
