In Centrs (the city centre) an old piece of furniture rarely stays put because there is nowhere to keep it — the rooms here tend to be generous. It stays put because there is no way to get it out. In an Art Nouveau or pre-war masonry building the room can be large and the ceilings high, but the route from the flat door to the pavement runs down a stairwell built for a completely different size of furniture.
We drive out to the centre: we look at your photos, dismantle if needed, carry the furniture out, load it and take it to the landfill. You don't drag anything down the stairs.
Art Nouveau from the inside: wide rooms, narrow stairs
The characteristic stock in the centre is Art Nouveau and pre-war masonry buildings, with offices, hotels, retail units and public buildings among them. Every house here is its own case, and the age, structure or stairwell width can't be assumed without looking. Still, a few conditions repeat often enough in this kind of stock to be planned for at the point of enquiry:
In buildings like these a long item — a tall wardrobe, a bed frame, a section of a corner sofa — frequently cannot be swung round on the half-landing. It is that landing, not the flat door, that decides whether the piece comes out whole.
In many pre-war buildings one was never built. The stairs are then the only route regardless of the floor, and a fifth floor is a very different job from a second.
The shaft was dropped into the existing stairwell, so the cabin is for people only. A double mattress, a tall wardrobe or a sofa usually won't fit — in that case the lift doesn't change the size of the job at all.
Dressers, wall units and wardrobes made to match high ceilings are longer than anything you can turn in the stairwell. We nearly always budget for dismantling those.
That is why the form asks for the floor and whether there is a lift, and, where possible, a photo of the stairwell too. In the centre those two facts account for most of the working time.
Access, parking and how long the van can stand there
The centre is densely built, the streets are busy and parking outside the entrance is restricted. We don't claim in advance to know what the rules are on a given street — access and the stopping place are agreed before we set out, and at some addresses they may be restricted or possible only briefly.
In practice that changes two things. First, we bring the furniture out in a prepared order so that loading happens in one go rather than piece by piece. Second, if there is no stopping outside the entrance, expect a longer carry by hand to wherever we are allowed to stand.
Some buildings in the centre have an inner courtyard with gates, a keypad lock or a procedure set by the building manager. If you know that entry to the courtyard is closed or has to be booked, put it in the notes — then we plan the right option straight away.

Yes. Pre-war buildings often have no lift at all and we plan for that. We carry down the stairs from any floor. Tell us the floor on the form — it determines how many people we send and whether it's better to dismantle the piece in the flat.
Not always. In centre buildings the lift was often retrofitted into the existing stairwell, so the cabin is small. A mattress, a tall wardrobe or a sofa usually won't fit, and then we carry down the stairs anyway. If you can, mention the rough cabin dimensions on the form.
