In Riga, furniture removal is almost never just a transport question. The hard part is getting the item out of the flat — through the door, down the stairwell and over to the van. Precisely because Riga's building stock is so varied, the very same sofa takes five minutes at one address and needs dismantling and two people at another.

Riga is not one single city
In practical terms Riga has several completely different building types, and each of them changes the job:
High ceilings and wide rooms, but narrow stairwells with tight turns, often with no lift or a very small one. Driving into the courtyard may be restricted, and you can only stop briefly by the entrance.
— Purvciems, Kengarags, Imanta, Plavnieki, Zolitude and others. Standardised layouts, so a photo is often enough to tell whether a sofa will fit through the door. The lifts in these buildings are narrow: a double mattress or a tall wardrobe normally won't fit, even where there is a lift.
— Mezaparks, Bergi, Bierini and the outskirts. There is no stairwell, but the distance from the door to the van tends to be longer, and gates, fencing or soft ground can limit how close we park.
Wider corridors and a goods lift, but access often has to be arranged in advance with the building manager or security.
That is why the form asks for the floor and whether the building has a lift. In Riga this isn't a formality — it is the main thing that determines the size of the job.
What most often makes carrying out difficult in Riga
In older buildings there is a narrow landing between floors where a long item simply cannot be turned. It is often that spot, not the flat's own door, that decides whether a piece has to be dismantled.
A lift being present is no guarantee that the item will fit inside. Mattresses, wardrobes and corner sofas usually don't.
In the centre and the old quarters you can't always park close to the entrance; expect a longer carry.
The width of a doorway on the same street can vary by several centimetres depending on the age of the building.
We assess all of this from photos before we come out. If the photos show that the item won't come out whole, we plan the dismantling straight away rather than discovering it on the doorstep.
Why furniture often stands for years in Riga
Old furniture rarely disappears by itself in Riga. In a block of flats there is nowhere to put it, so it ends up on the balcony, in the cellar or in the corner of a room. Cellars in older buildings are damp, and after a year or two a sofa or mattress comes out heavier and dirtier than it went in.
The second reason is practical: furniture must not be left by the household waste bins, and when it is, collecting it becomes a separate cost that the building manager normally spreads across the whole building. That is why the question of where to put old furniture is felt most keenly in Riga's blocks of flats.
The third reason is the one we started with — the item physically will not come out without being taken apart and without a second pair of hands. That is the part of the work we take on.

On a mass-built housing estate the layouts repeat, so a photo is usually enough to say whether a sofa will fit through the door.
